Open Question: What's the process of switching to active duty?
I'm a 19D (Cav Scout) in the National Guard. I'm wanting to switch to active duty. I was wanting to know what the process of making the switch is, and every the major rules that apply. Most specifically, can I do it mid-contract? Before you just tell me to contact my team leader, the majority of my unit that isn't deployed is nice of retarded. A big reason why I want to switch.

Open Question: Tax question... I work in my home state, and another state. Who do I owe?
I live in Massachusetts, and have a regular job here. But I'm also a member of the National Guard in Pennsylvania, and earned income there. Apparently, it looks like I owe state tax to both states. As a Mass resident, MA seems to want me to file including my entire income, even money I earned in another state. How much do I file with PA, as a non-resident? This seems like I'm really getting screwed, having to pay taxes on my earnings *twice*... The income I earned in PA was fairly substantial too, because it includes a big re-enlistment bonus. I've already paid into PA state taxes over $1000 out of my paychecks... and now MA wants me to pay them the same thing too??

Resolved Question: DS: "The dogs called pit bulls are just dogs." Hector the Pit Bull, Vic’s former dog a STAR?
Citizens for a No Kill Philadelphia (CNKP) holds lecture series at Drexel School of Law and Hector the Pit Bull (Vic’s former dog) was STAR A panel discussion was held last night at Drexel University's Earle Mack School of Law titled The Importance of Creating a Safe and Humane Society for every People and Animals. It was hosted by Citizens for a No Kill Philadelphia (CNKP) and Drexel's Student Animal Legal Defense Fund. The main point demonstrated by speaker Donald Cleary of the National Canine Research Council was "The dogs called pit bulls are just dogs." The star of the evening was by no doubt, Hector the Pit Bull, a rehabilitated former Michael Vick fighting dog rescued from Bad Newz Kennels by BAD RAP a San Francisco based rescue group and adopted by Clara and Andrew "Roo" Yori. Hector delighted attendees with his gentle nature, loving attitude, and grace below pressure (of public appearances) in spite of his numerous eternal scars from his former life. Certified by Therapy Dogs International, Hector has passed the AKC Canine Good Citizen exam (twice) and the temperament test of the American Temperament Test Society. He carries his possess business cards in his vest wherever he goes and is free with giving affection and pets with any human nearby. His job is being a therapy dog and an ambassador for the pit bull breed. Hector has passed 10 tests to become a certified therapy dog. And no, Vick did not cease by to look how Hector is doing. Cleary went on to point out that the words pit bull and dog are not used interchangeably; arguing they should be he clarified Dr. Randall Lockwood's position that dogs cannot be characterized without humans. He also defined the difference between family dogs and resident dogs. The former being a companion animal who is treated as part of a family, living indoors, cared for and loved with the latter being dogs used for guarding or protection, often chained and kept outside with little, if any human interaction. Cleary also noted negative impressions about pit bulls have been perpetuated by the media and used the examples of two dog bite incidents. One, a fatal dog bite of a six year old child by a non pit bull dog received only two published articles nationwide while a story about a minor pit bull bite incident received thousands of articles written about it. every speakers were in agreement it is important to bring to the public's attention the positive stories about pit bulls, like Hector's. Leigh Siegfried, certified pet dog trainer and owner of Opportunity Barks, a Jenkintown based company, spoke about canine aggression and the fact it is situational. An example mentioned was highlighted in a picture shown of a pit bull chained to her whelping box with an oversized sized chain and her nursing pups. Another was allowing a child (or adult) to try to engage an emaciated dog in interaction; this can be a recipe for disaster because a starving dog is much more likely to bite than want to play. She stressed it is people that need to control dogs citing the importance of training and the ongoing impact of a loving owner upon a dog. Opportunity Barks also holds classes in Philadelphia. Next was Elise Van Kavage, Esq., Senior Legislative Attorney with Best Friends Animal Society in Kanab, Utah. VanKavage explained breed specific legislation (BSL) is in fact discrimination and called for legislation outlawing the practice. Pennsylvania is one of only two states that does outlaw BSL practice, thereby preventing townships and other local governments from enacting BSL. She dispelled the myth of a dog bite epidemic and quoted statistics showing a fourfold decrease in reported dog bites from the 1970's to gift time. Moderator Stacy Coleman of the Animal Farm Foundation in New York stressed the importance of communities coming together to be the voice of the voiceless and reminded everyone to be respectful of each other's opinions and points of view when dealing with BSL. CNKP's Garrett Elwood introduced some local animal advocates including Dierdre Franklin of Pinups for Pitbulls, Allison Lamond from PAWS, Christina Voigt from ACCT, Claire Tillman, Humane Education Coordinator at CNKP and Alanna Burke from Saving Temple's Cats. Many attendees were able to pose for photos with Hector and Roo Yori. Questions from attendees were answered and participation was interactive. It was clear that those in attendance were dedicated animal advocates who want to make a difference in Philadelphia. CBS' Todd Quinones did the story "Vick's Victim" and Jim Melwert of KYW wrote “Hector Aims to Show the Softer Side of Pit Bulls.” The following link shows a video of Hector visiting a room full of 3rd Grade kids. http://wcco.com/pets/hector.vick.dog.2.1386512.html Thank you in advance. Star for your contacts. What does this open debates for: That Vic was not such a bad guy? BSL? The dogs called Pit Bull are just dogs? The media’s motto, The public's need for education, by just banning the bully breeds, the government has given the public a untrue sense of security. Leaving the communities open to a higher number of dog attacks.

Open Question: received an OUI (Driving Intoxicated) Can I still get a job as a Fed?
I served 6 1/2 years in the military active duty and National Guard as an 11B (Infantrymen) in the Army. I also did a couple combat tours. Honorable discharge as an E-5. I am a Disabled Vet with 10point scale but would be able to pass physical requirement, I'm going to be starting up college in Sept and am deciding if getting a degree in Criminal Justice or Homeland Security would work for me, since about 8 months ago I received an OUI charge. It was the anniversary of a good friends death that served with me over seas no excuses I did do the crime and ended up blowing a 0.21 . My lawyer did receive it down from a criminal OUI to just a standard OUI over 0.08 I'm sure a background check would still state it was over 0.15 though. Question is, if I do every that schooling, will I even stand a chance of working for an agency?

Open Question: National Guard interstate transfer?
I'm in the national guard and the unit is deploying next year. I want to move to another state for personal reasons, and my unit is not letting me transfer out even though the gaining unit wants to take me. If I wait around to be deployed next year with this unit, I will lose out on 6 months of school as well as work and will be $10,000 in debt. What are my options? I saw on some other state's websites that you are allowed to be transferred if you move 50 miles away. Is this with the consent of the unit only? Thanks. I'm not trying to avoid deployment. I requested the transfer in january to move as soon as possible and was willing to deploy with the gaining unit this year. And for your information I served in the Iraq war in the Army where I almost got blown into pieces, so if you don't have any useful insight other than, "so you're trying to avoid deployment" with your self righteousness, please refrain from commenting and wasting space. Thank you.

Open Question: Re-enlisting in the Army with Inhaler?
Hey Ya'll, My husband is in the NG right now, but is transferring out to go back to active duty, I was wondering is he would need a waiver for an inhaler the Army had given him while he was still in active duty two years ago, they determined that for PT he was allowed to take a puff beforehand, but nowhere in his file does it state he was diagnosed with asthma. He was a cav scout, but is now infantry, and the national guard did not have an issue with it. Was just wondering if anyone would know if he would technically need a waiver because its in his medical record from the Army, and if he would, the chances of him actually having it approved. He has completed the retraining for 11b, as well as passing PT tests, thank you for any advice/answers!

Open Question: does arbitration count as a conviction?
I'm 17 and in the Army National Guard. I have never gotten a single D-note, ticket, or anything like that. When i was in middle school and at the age of 13 i thought i could receive away with whatever i want so i took my teachers laptop. I returned it 2 weeks later but they still had to write a police report. i didn't receive written up or the school didn't take any action against me. No charges were filed but it was mandatory that i go to arbitration, in which i completed everything that needed to be done. My question is i'm planning on going intel in the Guard and 2 requirements are: # No record of conviction by court-martial # No record of conviction by a civil court for any offense other than minor traffic violations. will the arbitration fall below that or since it was expunged and me being so young and currently with a flawless record will they not worry about it?

Open Question: volunteer for deployment for Army National Guard?

She just found out about 2 months ago that her unit is getting deployed to Kuwait in January next year while my unit is supposed to receive deployed in 2012. I want to volunteer to go with my pal's unit because I would rather go sooner than later instead of just waiting around for my unit to find out when and where they are going. Open Question: Which is better, the Regular Army or the National Guard?
I'm a Junior in College and I'm thinking about joining the National Guard this summer. I wanted to know if it would be better to wait until I've graduated and then join the Regular Army instead. I originally wanted to join the National Guard for two reasons, the first being that it pays for school. I have over twenty thousand in student loans, however, and that was the limit my recruiter gave me when I talked to him. So it'll pay for part and not every. Regular Army has the same deal I'm sure, with the exception of certain MOS's. My National Guard recruiter told me that he could arrange it so that I did Basic Training, AIT Training, and then spent six months in my unit before going to OCS. I know the National Guard would look good on my resume and that OCS would look even better, but there's a chance that if I join now, I'll miss the start of the Fall semester at school and delaying my graduation by at least six months as well as having the fill out a lot of paperwork to receive a military deferment for my student loans. Basically, I want to know if I should join the National Guard now or wait until next year and I've graduated to join the regular Army. Which is the better choice given my circumstances?

Open Question: Why did I receive such a high level of a discharge?
I was recently discharged from the Army National Guard, due to a personal request to go active duty in the Air Force. I requested my discharge December 17th and I was discharged January 25th. I enlisted November 11, 2009. I was actually in the National Guard for maybe 40+ days. I didn't go to basic nor drills. I have done nothing but signed on the dotted line. I got my discharge order and I received a discharge order of 3. I was called by my Air Force recruiter saying that this may be an issue. I want to know how severe a discharge level of 3 is and why I received such a high level of a discharge for doing what I feel nothing. I feel it is wrong to not let me serve my country because I want to join a different branch of service.

Ive taken the ASVAB, scored high, taken my physical up at MEPS, chose my MOS, years in, station in state, every of that. I sent the court papers to my recruiter, and now Ive been waiting for 1+ too hear back from him. I tried calling, emailing and nothing. What should I do, I really want to join.

Open Question: Is this good enough to get into the United States Coast Guard Academy?
My overall average is around a 95, so that would be a 4.0 GPA. My courses are mostly honors courses with one A.P. class. I have played soccer for my school for four years, but unfortunately I only made varsity in my senior year. I was a captain for my JV soccer team in 10th and 11th grade. I also am involved in National Honor Society and National Foreign Language Honor Society. In the past, I participated in Model Congress and Leadership Skills. Other than after school, I also play goaltender for my roller hockey team and I help out with kids with special needs. I am applying for the AIM program and I understand this is a big deal because it will give me an idea as to whether or not I will be accepted to the school next year when I apply.

Open Question: Can I join the Navy or the National Guard with Graves Disease?
Today I met with a National Guard Recruiter, and he told me I was completely disqualified because you can't take ANY medications while in basic training. So I called a Navy recruiter, and he was at least willing to look into it. He looked it up and said Hyperthyroidism of any nice completely disqualifies you. But he wasn't sure about hypothyroidism. Because if I take the Radioactive Iodine treatment, it will kill off my thyroid and knock it into hypo. Is that acceptable? Because I was reading about a medical waiver, though I'm not sure exactly what that is.

Open Question: What's the Air National Guard like?
I've always wanted to join the military, but have always felt too tied down by obligations at home (school, family, etc etc). I've never considered the Reserves or National Guard before and am just learning more about it. The Air National Guard peaked my interest. Especially since their headquarters for my state is literally like 5 miles from my home. From what I understand the Air Guard focuses on staying in the US to protect it from foreign adversaries. Is there a chance to be deployed? Whats the pay like? How much time do you spend actually working every month? I'm a full time college student so I'd really like to stay here and finish my degree, but if I can serve my country and receive a paycheck at the same time that would be very awesome. Any info you guys can provide would be awesome. Does being a college student have any affect on your likelyhood to be deployed? I'd like to serve my country, but I really don't want to risk delaying my graduation.

OK, I will be starting a four year university to earn my bachelors this fall, I am interested in joining the ANG to help alleviate the financial burden and for the challenge and opportunity. However, I am undecided on when to join during college, mainly because I want to participate in the study away or study abroad programs and I'm not sure if I can work this in when I joined, I already know that it is very probable I will have to postpone schooling awhile to go to BMT and Tech School. SO I have two main questions- Is it possible to study abroad while in the Guard and what is the likelihood/odds of being deployed while still in school?

Open Question: What is the likeliness of deployment for the new 1U0X1 career field?
I am highly interested in coming back onto AD to receive into this career field. I am currently in the CA Air National Guard and times are tough right now as far as financial stability. I like not having to worry about deployment right now, but I want to arrive back onto AD. I would like to know how the deployment rate would be for this AFSC. I would assume that deployments for them would be on the rise seeing as they are literally at the war-front. Any information that can be gathered is truly appreciated. Thank you.

Resolved Question: How do you write a Military Memorandum for Conditional Release to Active Duty?
My husband is in the Army National Guard and is trying to go active duty Army. His DD 368 was working it's way up the COC with signatures but at the last signature(Brigade Commander) the BC couldn't sign it because the recruiter signed his spot. So now, SFC of my husband's unit told him he can still receive every the signatures as long as he gets another 368 form. My husband has now turned it in as of yesterday to the SFC but now SFC wants a memorandum about why he wants to go active to go along with the DD 368 because another soldier in the unit has requested to go active too but wrote a 4 page memorandum! Of course, the husband has never written one and we want to make a good impression. So how do we write one? Any formal headings?
